Shuzenji Brewery
A Brewery Dream
A dream is realized with the spring 2014 opening of Baird Brewery Gardens Shuzenji.
Our Shuzenji facility is a back-to-nature farm-type brewery on a lovely three hectare parcel of property in the Shuzenji area of Izu city, right on the banks of the same Kano River that runs past our original Numazu brewery.
Natural Beauty
This beautiful country brewery is situated on the banks of the pristine Kano River in the idyllic Shuzenji area of Izu city.
By brewing and farming here we aim to highlight the intricate connection that exists between land and beer.
It’s the perfect setting, too, for the enjoyment of lovingly crafted Baird Beer.
Beer + Nature = Paradise
On-Site Taproom
On the brewery third floor we have built a lovely 20-tap tasting room called the Brewery Gardens Taproom.
It includes an outdoor beer deck with a spectacular view of the surrounding valley and mountains, a gift shop, and an observation corridor where you may spy down on the brewing activity below.
Fresh Beer. Pristine Nature. Warm Camaraderie.
State-Of-The-Art Facilities
We are deeply proud of our world-class brewing facility. Not only does it permit us the consistent production of the highest quality beer, but it allows us to do so in a sustainable way that protects, rather than depletes, our beautiful natural surroundings. Key brewery sustainability practices include:
- Heat capture and re-use during the brewing process.
- High-tech waste water processing that allows us to discharge effluent to the river that is cleaner than the river water itself. We hope to re-purpose this effluent in the near future for use as ‘grey’ water as well as irrigation water for our on-site organic agriculture activities.
- Re-use of spent grain and hops for conversion into organic compost for use as natural fertilizer in farming.
- Roof-top solar energy generation which we hope to grow to a level, in combination with other renewable energy sources, that can supply 80-100% of our site energy needs.
- On-site tree planting for carbon capture as well as for the production of organic fruit for use as a beer ingredient in our Fruitful Life Series seasonal beer program.
Outdoor Activities
On the grounds we are farming as well as brewing, having planted organic hop and vegetable gardens and a fruit orchard too.
We sponsor regular harvest parties in which customers and local friends help us to pick and prepare the agricultural produce for use in our brewing process. (We finish the effort, of course, with a beer and barbecue reward!).
We host spring and fall outdoor festivals to which we invite other local artisans and craftspeople to show and sell their wares and to help us celebrate our local community and our beautiful natural surroundings.
In summer 2018 we launched an on-site camping business, Camp Baird, where outdoor enthusiasts can stay the night and fully immerse in the natural wonders that exist at Baird Brewery Gardens Shuzenji.
