Music in the kitchen
You go into most closed kitchens in a casual dining establishment and among the clanking pots, crackling fryers, and droning expeditors you can hear music. Whether it be teeth-gnashing grunge, head-nodding hip hop, or blaringly loud salsa, music has a very important place in a working kitchen. Besides keeping the cooks enthusiastic and attentive in a sometimes very tedious and physically taxing workplace, music also sets the rhythm of the kitchen, helping cooks move from one task to another at a steady pace. We humans are slaves to rhythm, since that’s what keeps our heart beating. Rhythm makes us comfortable, and when you’re on your feet in a sweltering kitchen for 13 hours a day, a little comfort goes a long way!
We have speakers here in the Nakameguro Taproom kitchen, and we take turns selecting prep music. Here’s what’s playing these days in our kitchen:
Alice in Chains – No Excuses
Cypress Hill – Cock the Hammer
AC/DC – Back in Black
The Band Apart – Moonlight Stepper
Judy and Mary – Overdrive
Till next time!
