Rebirth of Nakameguro Taproom
Howdy, Chris here.
The Nakameguro Taproom was our first “export” of the Taproom concept. Tokyo had long provided a steady stream of people to our Fishmarket Taproom in Numazu — beer geeks, families, pub owners and general beer enthusiasts. And so Tokyo seemed a natural place to expand our presence. Four years and two additional Taprooms later (Harajuku and Bashamichi, Yokohama), we are very pleased to announce the rebirth of Nakameguro as a New Haven-style Pizza Pub.
We have long wanted to have a pizza-themed Taproom — in fact, the Bashamichi location was slated to become just that before Bryan and Sayuri met Uncle Chuck, who wooed them with his home-smoked barbecued meats. Meeting Chef Joon was the chance we’d been waiting for. A first-class chef and beer lover from Portland, OR (arguably American’s best beer city), Joon wanted nothing more than to merge his two loves. A chance meeting at Harajuku Taproom was all it took to convince Bryan that Joon was the real deal. And then during his official interview, when asked what he would do if he could do anything, his simple answer “pizza” sealed the deal.
I had a “test pizza” last weekend when I stopped by Nakameguro. It was wonderful — thin crispy crust topped with a nice red sauce, tomatoes and homemade sausages. Mmmmm. I wanted another!
New Haven pizza is a sort of Neapolitan pizza with a crispy crust that is often burned black in spots — this char adds a nice flavor while giving the crust the strength to hold up the ingredients. My description does it a disservice, really — tasting it is the only way to fully appreciate what Joon has created.
And on Thursday, June 14, you’ll be able to do just that. We are holding a Nakameguro rebirth party to officially unveil the new menu. The event will start at 6:00 and run till 10:00 — all you can eat for ¥3000. Joon will have his full lineup of pizzas, including the traditional New Haven pie — white sauce with clams — and the brewer’s pie — our beloved Maris Otter pale malt and hop salt will be incorporated into the whole wheat crust. You will also get to try the new salads and may even be some pickles and nuts and olives for your munching pleasure. And of course we will be pouring the full range of Baird Beer regulars along with seasonals and guest beers. From the 15th, the new Nakameguro food menu will feature starters (nuts, pickles, Italian cold cuts, olives), salads (four regulars and a rotating seasonal), and pizzas (four regulars, a rotating seasonal, plus the option to make your own).
We hope that you can come out for our rebirth party — stop in to say hi to Joon and try his wonderful new pizzas. I guarantee you’ll want to come back for more!
